Why prices vary so much

There’s no single price for a slab leak, because there’s no single slab leak. Two jobs can both be “a leak under the kitchen” and cost very different amounts. The price comes down to a handful of things.

Finding it

Detection is usually its own line on the bill. Ask whether it’s credited toward the repair if you hire the same company.

Getting to it

A spot repair means breaking through the slab, fixing the pipe, and patching the concrete. A leak under a garage floor is easier than one under a tiled kitchen or a run of hardwood, and the flooring on top is often a bigger expense than the plumbing.

How it’s fixed

A reroute runs a new line through the walls or attic. It often costs more in plumbing than a spot repair but saves the floor. A whole-house repipe costs the most, and it ends the leak chase for the whole system.

Drains are different

Repairing a broken drain under the slab, especially by tunneling from outside, is usually a bigger job than fixing a supply line.

The house

Size, number of bathrooms, one story or two, and how easy the attic is to work in all change the labor.

How to compare quotes

Get each quote in writing, and make sure they’re quoting the same thing. Ask what’s included: detection, permits, concrete patching, drywall repair, and haul-off. Ask what isn’t, especially flooring. If one company quotes a spot repair and another a reroute, ask each why.

And ask about a warranty on the repair, in writing. Each company sets its own.

Getting some of it back

Two places can help with the bill. Your homeowners policy may pay for part of it. See insurance and slab leaks. And several cities credit part of the water bill after a hidden leak is repaired, with a plumber’s invoice as proof.
